Russia’s military operations and attacks on transport infrastructure and crops in Ukraine have hampered the export of Ukrainian agricultural products, putting food supply for millions of people at high risk. Ukraine is the fifth exporter of wheat in the world. Many countries, in particular in Africa and the Middle East, are dependent on Ukrainian wheat exports.
At the Special meeting of the European Council in May 2022, the 27 leaders of the EU reiterated their resolute condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which is having a direct impact on global food security and affordability.
The Council has addressed the worsening food security crisis since the onset of the war. EU measures aim to help European and global citizens, in particular the most vulnerable, to have enough nutritious food at affordable prices.
