She can’t be it if she can’t see it! Inspiring more women to get involved in agriculture

This was the purpose of today’s event in the European Parliament hosted by MEP C arvalhais (S&D, PT), Avram (S&D, RO) and Schmiedtbauer (EPP, AT) which aimed to highlight the role women play in the agricultural sector. On this occasion, Copa and Cogeca launched the call for the next Women Farmers Innovation Award 2023.

More than ever before, the agriculture and forestry sector are essential for food security, ecological transitions, the fight against climate change and energy dependency. The farming sector needs more support and consideration to be more attractive. It will be the only way to reach generational renewal.

With the support of Corteva Agriscience, Copa and Cogeca brought together 8 inspiring women in agriculture working towards a more resilient agriculture sector. They shared with participants the valuable work they are doing and their vision towards getting more women involved in this important sector for society.

Chairwoman of Copa’s Women’s Working Party Lotta Folkesson declared, “Our aim is twofold, it’s about giving a platform to highlight how women are involved in the agricultural sector, whether that be as farmers working on a farm or as an engineer or scientist working towards a sustainable agriculture sector. It is also about creating role models and encouraging more women to choose a career in agriculture.”

In addition, Copa and Cogeca announced the launch of the 7th edition of the Innovation Award for Women farmers, supported by Corteva. The aw ard aims to highlight the contributions women make towards rural development and a sustainable farming sector and is an opportunity to showcase the inspiring and innovative activities that these rural women and farmers are doing across the EU.

With 2022/23 being the year where Vision for Rural Areas will be at the forefront of our work, this year’s topic is “Women Farmers at the forefront of Rural Areas”. With this in mind, Copa and Cogeca would like to acknowledge the work initiated by women in rural areas and the positive impact across the economic, social, and environmental aspects on their local community.

A 10,000€ cash prize will be given to the winner and a 5,000€ cash prize for the runner-up(s). For more information about the aw ard and to see the previous editions, please check: https://w omenfarmersaw ard.eu/.
