We are looking for a Zootechnical engineer or a person with similar background in animal husbandry. We have recently purchased a 64ha plot of pastureland in Baixo Alentejo, near the border with Algarve. We are looking for a young, ambitious professional who has an open mind and is willing to experiment and do their own research rather than following standard guidelines.
This position will be a labor of love. You will have a great deal of creative and operative control and you will be managing the farm on a day-to-day basis. Some of your roles include: interacting with livestock (cows, goats, sheep, chickens), moving livestock between paddocks, buying and selling livestock on the market, planning and managing food sources and nutrition, measuring animal and plant performance and well-being and implementing changes.
The goal of the project is to improve the degraded soil of the land by implementing the ideas of regenerative agriculture. We will be maximizing diverse cover crops throughout the year, using animals in a system of adaptive multi-paddock grazing (AMP) to keep plants at the correct height and deposit manure, and we will minimize soil disturbance. We will not till or turn the soil, we will not use herbicides of any kind and we will avoid synthetic fertilizers.
We intend to start with small numbers of local breeds of cows, sheep, goats, chickens and pigs and increase the herds as the land and its productivity improves.
